The Beginning

The first spark that inspired this project began in a dusty high school library over 15 years ago. Phil Dixon's "The Negro Baseball Leagues: A Photographic History", with its collection of over 600 black and white photos chronicling the birth and death of Black baseball, had me hooked from the moment I picked it up. For a kid in Cincinnati, reading the occasional stories about Tigers, Clowns, Buckeyes, Cuban Stars and others that visited my beloved Queen City's Crosley Field were amazing, sure, but more than anything I wanted to know what they and so many others wore. We know now that the Tigers wore old Reds uniforms. But what were the Clowns wearing a few years later? Why did the Elite Giants have a D on their uniforms for a year or two? How did the Crawfords get their name? The answers to these and so many more questions are the basis of this site.

My research is powered by a team of one man, hours of scouring old newspapers, auction sites, and trusted books. I expect to make mistakes and get some things incorrect. I ask for your patience and guidance, and for you to contact me with any feedback or suggestions.

If you are still reading this rambling, I humbly thank you for getting this far. I hope to share my love of all things Black baseball and inspire others to find the same joy and wonder that I hold towards this vital chapter of American baseball history.
